چکیده

Conical intersections are now known to be involved in a large variety of photochemical transformations. In this paper, we present a simple method for determining the existence of a conical intersection for a given chemical reaction. The method, based on the phase change theorem, is easy to apply, does not require quantum chemical calculations, and uses ground state surface properties only. The method can be used to analyze all kinds of photochemical reactions, including isomerizations, rearrangements and dissociations. It is shown that if the system passes through a conical intersection on its return to the ground state surface, at least two di€erent products are necessarily formed (in addition, the system may return to the reactant by internal conversion). Non-adiabatic dynamics close to conical intersections and the surface hopping perspective

Conical intersections play a major role in the current understanding of electronic de-excitation in polyatomic molecules, and thus in the description of photochemistry and photophysics of molecular systems. This article reviews aspects of the basic theory underlying the description of non-adiabatic transitions at conical intersections, with particular emphasis on the important case when the dyn...

Electronically excited states and photochemical reaction mechanisms of β-glucose.

Carbohydrates are important molecular components of living matter. While spectroscopic and computational studies have been performed on carbohydrates in the electronic ground state, the lack of a chromophore complicates the elucidation of the excited-state properties and the photochemistry of this class of compounds. Herein, we report on the first computational investigation of the singlet phot...

A three-state model for the photophysics of guanine.

The nonadiabatic photochemistry of the guanine molecule (2-amino-6-oxopurine) and some of its tautomers has been studied by means of the high-level theoretical ab initio quantum chemistry methods CASSCF and CASPT2. Accurate computations, based by the first time on minimum energy reaction paths, states minima, transition states, reaction barriers, and conical intersections on the potential energ...

Assessment of Density Functional Methods for Obtaining Geometries at Conical Intersections in Organic Molecules

A number of commonly available density functionals have been tested for their ability to describe the energetics and the geometry at conical intersections in connection with the spin-restricted ensemble referenced Kohn-Sham (REKS) method. The minimum energy conical intersections have been optimized for several molecular systems, which are widely used as paradigmatic models of photochemical rear...

Nonadiabatic decay dynamics of 9H-guanine in aqueous solution.

The nonadiabatic decay of the biologically relevant guanine tautomer (9H-guanine) in aqueous solution has been investigated by trajectory surface hopping simulations in a quantum mechanical-molecular mechanical (QM-MM) framework. The QM part (9H-guanine) was treated at the semiempirical OM2/MRCI level, while the MM part (water) was described by the TIP3P force field. The optimized geometries fo...
